Studies on Morphological Changes of Various Organs and Tissue Storage Irons in Ethionine Fed Rats

Abstract
The author studied morphological changes in various organs and tissue storage irons in albino rats(body weight: 100¡200gm) fed with basal diet and additionally 0.5% DL-ethionine for one two and three months respectively, with the following results.
1) Body weight: The growing rate of the experimental group decreased markedly comparing with that of the control group (fed basal diet only). The body weight of the experimental group decreased from the beginning of the experiment. The weight at the first week showed most marked decrease reaching 10.4% loss and thereafter the weight increased grandually reaching to the initial weight at the tenth week.
2) Organ weight: The weights of the liver and spleen of the experimental group were heavier than those of control group. The weight of the submaxillary glands of the experimental group decreased slightly and the weight of the testes decreased markedly compared with those of the control group.
3) Liver: Histologically, the liver of the experimental group showed central necrosis, fatty change, increased regenerative activity of the liver cells, marked proliferation of the bile duct epithelium, slight fibrosis and mild inflammatory infiltrate.
4) Testies: Histologically, marked atrophic change in the seminiferous tubules and observed, the degree of which was more prominent as the period of feeding with ethionine longer.
5) Salivary gland and pancreas: In both organs shrinkage and degenerative changes of the acinar cells were remarkable and slight regenerative change appeared as the experimental period longer.
6) Spleen: Histologically, the spleen revealed moderate degree of pulp cell proliferation, marked congestion and mild iron reaction.
7) Kidney: Histologically, slight degree of calcium deposit in renal tubules, mild fibrosis of glomeruli and regenerative change of tubular epithelial cells were observed.
8) Serum iron and tissue storage irons: The serum iron of the experimental group rats decreased compared with that of the control group. The hemosiderin and ferritin irons in the hepatic and duodenal tissues showed no marked difference between the two groups. The storage iron of the testicle in the experimental group increased slightly compared with that in the control group.
